The Human Experience
In my practice, I get the opportunity to listen to people’s stories and get a glimpse of what their lives are like. People give me some kind of idea, and I write a poem about it. I allow people to give me words, phrases, or their whole life stories. I do my best to create a safe space for them to confide in me about their lives. I have written many poems about relationships, new beginnings in a new city, friendships, heartache--real things that happened. It’s humanizing, in a way, to experience vulnerability with these strangers. They trust me enough to spill their whole lives to me, and I find that incredible.
The wall of the exhibition are sprinkled with my typewritten poetry, highlighting real-life details and stories and humans, showcasing the little pockets of life that these strangers experience.
During the opening night, guests are invited to share suggestions based around true people, feelings and events to inspire on-the-spot typewritten poetry.
I want people to see themselves in my poetry, whether that’s through the details about a city or through the heartbreak over an ex lover. I want people to read my words and, even when the poems are not about them, be able to connect with something, even if the connection is simply being human. That is the most beautiful connection.
