Interlude

Dylan Rishel

“As a recent graduate and emerging artist, I am faced with the posing question of ‘what is next?’ With new beginnings revealing a sense of wonder, I find it necessary to reflect on the years I have spent as a student. While moving away from a familiar studio space, I stumbled upon editions of past work that served as a catalyst for a new purpose!

As I downsize in preparation, I embrace sustainability through the utilization of what would otherwise be discarded. I proceed to use layering as a technique to instill depth, though I take a different approach with my more recent works by cutting and combining old and new. This process is a response to limiting my waste-output while also staying frugal in my practice. The use of hand-cut portals serves as an interplay between feelings of change and the act of transitioning. Through deconstruction and collage, I create a new perspective that encourages viewers to engage with my work.

I find a sense of comfort while documenting these moments of exploration. The familiarity in the act of making encourages me to cast aside feelings of hesitation. As I welcome this time of transition, I hope to embrace the unknown while entering Interlude; a pause between before and after, a place to rest and recover. “ ⏤ Rishel
